Faith, Culture, Democracy and Philanthropy, (theologia, ethos, demokratia and philanthropia), are the threads that bind us together. Americans are a tightly knit tapestry woven together with threads of abundant diversity, each brilliantly colored with their own history, distinctive culture, enduring faith, and rich traditions. On November 12, 2010 we will celebrate the thread of the Greek Americans. In 2010 almost two million Americans claim Greek ancestry. The largest majority lives in the New York tri-state area, so it is in New York where we have chosen to celebrate the Hellenic Community’s contribution to the American tapestry and recognize the diversity of all the people who make up the individual fibers of this great nation.

“Weave in Faith and God will find the thread”. Few ethnic groups are so tightly intertwined with their religion and their national ancestry as Greek Americans are to the Greek (Eastern) Orthodox Church. The Christian Church took form and developed within a Greek speaking world. The New Testament was written in Greek in order to proclaim the Christian Faith to a Greek speaking world. The word Orthodox is taken from the Greek language which means correct belief. It is this belief that is the foundation which today’s Greek Americans have in their Hellenic values, language, culture, and tradition. It is their faith and spirituality that is spun into the fiber of who a Greek American is and what makes their thread in the American fabric so strong, thus making the entire tapestry of this diverse nation so resilient.
